Fakhri Talebi was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1939 and spent her childhood and adolescence in a family where music, literature, and poetry held a special place. Her siblings were fond of playing the violin and the clarinet, and they would sometimes make music together, with Fakhri accompanying them in song. These intimate moments wove music and poetry into the fabric of her life from her earliest years.
She completed her studies in Philosophy and Educational Sciences at the University of Tehran.
She wrote her first poem at the age of eighteen, but, dissatisfied with it, threw it away. It was many years later, around the age of sixty, that poetry once again found its way into her life.
This time, however, the encounter endured. For more than twenty-five years, she has listened to the ebb and flow of words and has written thousands of poems. Seven collections have been published to date, while other poems are still in the process of being prepared for publication.
Her poetic solitude begins at daybreak, with a brief meditation, silence, and a quiet waiting for a line of poetry that may or may not arrive. She does not always regard poetry as something that must be consciously constructed. At times, a poem is already present in her mind before she has even thought about it, as though a hidden beloved within her were softly whispering it into her ear.
In such moments, the poet is neither entirely the source of the voice nor separate from it. She is the one who listens, welcomes the words, and gives them the space to discover their own form. Perhaps her many years of writing poetry have been less an effort to find answers than a practice in remaining alongside the questions: How can one draw closer to what dwells in the depths of the soul without reducing its mystery to a definitive explanation?
Fakhri Talebi’s poems emerge from this very solitude—from the meeting of silence and words, between what is heard within and what eventually finds its way into the outside world. Each poem bears the traces of this inner journey, a journey that continues to unfold.
Fakhri Talebi now lives in California, United States, with her husband, Ali Banova. With affection and dedication, he has helped her type and document her poems, playing a valuable role in preserving and compiling her body of work.
Fakhri Talebi welcomes opportunities to meet poetry lovers and participate in poetry readings and literary gatherings. Those interested in organizing poetry evenings or literary events are invited to contact her to make arrangements and invite her to participate as a guest poet.
