I Am a Grapevine
Sometimes transformation begins with the opening of a door.
A door that has remained closed for years, behind which grief, anxiety, sorrow, pride, and all that no longer belongs in the house of the heart have quietly gathered.
In her third collection, I Am a Grapevine, Fakhri Talebi opens such a door.
She turns an honest gaze inward—toward the distance that can sometimes arise between the mind and the tongue, toward thoughts that circle endlessly within, toward the pride that quietly makes its home in the heart, and toward those parts of ourselves that have not yet learned how to live in peace with who we are.
But this collection is not a story of remaining in darkness.
Each time one door closes, another opens toward stillness. Dark thoughts take flight like birds from the branches of the heart, the waters within grow calm, and the poet learns to meet whatever comes with gratitude and peace.
At the heart of this inward journey stands the image of the grapevine—a quiet symbol of patience and transformation.
A grape may begin sour, but time, light, and patience awaken its sweetness. Perhaps we are not so different. What is bitter, restless, or unripe within us today, if met with honesty and patience, may one day ripen into something sweet.
Elsewhere, the poet finds kinship with the flower that rises from the marsh—a flower that emerges from murky waters and finds its way toward the light. Beneath all its questions and inner struggles, this collection is an invitation to such a quiet striving: to become, in the brief passage of life, a little more aware, more truthful, more compassionate, and more humble.
Perhaps the secret of this collection lies within this simple image.
We are all, in one way or another, grapevines.
Sometimes sour, sometimes caught among thorns and mud, and sometimes heavy with fruit.
But we may still choose.
To let what is unripe within us slowly ripen.
And to allow what we carry in our hearts, before the winds of time carry us away, to become—a little sweeter.
