All That I Can Say of the World of Being Is Contained in a Single Word: Love
If the whole world could be summed up in a single word, perhaps that word would be love.
In this seventh collection of her poems, Fakhri Talebi sees love not merely as a feeling between two people, but as a language for understanding the world itself — a language she has spent years learning, spoken to in solitude, waited for, suffered through, celebrated, and ultimately come to believe holds many of existence's secrets within it.
In her poems, life sometimes resembles a chessboard whose next move no one can predict; sometimes it is like a piece of straw carried off by the wind; and sometimes it is a garden full of flowers, light, fragrance, and morning. Amid all this instability, love is the one thing the poet consciously, deliberately chooses.
She speaks of faces hidden behind masks, of hearts that won't reveal their secrets, of distance and waiting, of arrivals and non-arrivals, of joys that suddenly appear and sorrows that settle in the heart uninvited. Yet even in the face of life's impermanence, she does not let go of love.
Perhaps that is why, in this collection, love is less an answer to a question than a way of living: a way of seeing, a way of forgiving, a way of remaining patient — and perhaps most of all, a way of choosing beauty, even in a world that isn't always beautiful.
In the end, the poet gathers her entire description of existence into a single word: love. And what else could remain, when flowers fade, seasons change, people grow distant, and time carries us all away with it?
Perhaps it is love, precisely, that opens the world anew for us each day — in the scent of a flower, the light of a morning, the look of a friend, the silence of a heart, and in one simple, courageous decision:
that perhaps, in spite of everything, we must still choose love.
