The poem invites the reader to experience the "silence of a stone" through the seasons and senses — a river's murmur, snow-capped peaks, ocean waves, ripening fruit, a bear-shaped cloud, spring rain, a warm sunrise, and the tears and laughter of children and elders — closing with a note that the poem was inspired by an actual stone the poet saw on a street, and written after that encounter.

The poem reflects on retreating into a deep, wordless silence, letting go of the need to describe or name things, and finding stillness even as love and connection remain present without speech.

The poem recalls a time when flowers, fields, and seasons lived in harmony, then turns to a memory of a beloved arriving at dawn to invite the poet aboard a "train of light," cherishing the rare joy of that companionship and hoping the invitation will one day come again.

The Silence of Stone
Perhaps silence is not always a sign of stillness.
Sometimes what unfolds within silence reaches deeper than any spoken word.
In Silence of Stone, Fakhri Talebi takes us into a world where stone, water, snow, flowers, rain, sunlight, and human beings each speak in their own quiet language. A stone that at first appears lifeless becomes an invitation to wonder about the mystery of being—to ask what it means to be fully present in the world, to see, hear, taste, and feel, without always needing to speak.
In this collection, time too moves like an immense wheel. Centuries pass, the world turns, life comes and goes, and somewhere within this great turning, the human being awakens and asks: What remains through all this coming and going?
The poet first invites us to experience the world—to touch the water and snow, hear the waves, breathe in the scent of flowers, feel the warmth of the sun, and hear the laughter of children. But as we journey onward, the words begin, little by little, to fall away. Poetry grows weary of speech, the pen becomes humbled before what lives in the heart, and at last the lips fall silent.
But silence is not the end.
What has passed through words and arrived at silence is something that remains alive within the heart: love, trust, and a light within us that cannot be extinguished.
Perhaps this is the secret of Silence of Stone: that sometimes we must move beyond the noise of the world, and even beyond the noise of words, in order to hear the voice that has been speaking to us from the beginning, deep within the soul.
And perhaps the stone, if we pause long enough to listen, is not silent at all—
perhaps it simply speaks in a language that can only be heard by the heart.
